Seed Production and Quality

The Seed Chain

Production of seeds involves a chain of different stakeholders ranging from breeders, farmers and seed technologists to salesmen and legislators. High seed quality requires the concerted action of all stakeholders and the ability to address quality at all levels.

Thus, good seeds are about agronomy and technical knowledge as well as efficient organisation and communication within the seed chain. Moreover, economies and tradition vary from country to country and each seed chain must be adapted to fit local demands and resources. Efficient seed production and high seed quality thereby represent both important goals and important challenges in agricultural development.
